Isossy Children meets Lorrie Brook, the founder of Our Children Australia

Isossy Children understands the importance of family dynamics and how changes in those dynamics can have an impact on children. In this profile we meet Lorrie Brook, the founder of Our Children Australia who offers a crucial service to families who are going through divorce.

Lorrie Brook
What inspired you to start your business?
I started my career as a Family Lawyer, doing my best to help as many children as possible.  What I learnt through this was that by the time parents came to see me a lot of damage had already been done. Children were already embroiled in disputes and were the ‘messenger’ and pawn in their parent’s conflict.  To me this wasn’t good enough, these children deserved so much more and so I set out to try and come up with a solution.  From this came Our Children Australia.

What have been your favourite client experiences?
I love seeing parents’ focus on their children and what is in their best interests; it is magical when they can do this from an objective and unemotional viewpoint. I have had parents who have been able to put their needs and desires to the side and have come up with arrangements whereby they are the people who move each time, leaving the children to stay in the family home and they come and go as agreed.
I love receiving feedback from parents who use www.ourchildren.com.au letting me know that their relationship with the other parent has improved because of the site.

What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?
Marketing is the key - Know what you want and don’t be afraid to go and get it.

What are your long term goals?
I would love to see www.ourchildren.com.au expand to provide more services  (e.g. mediation and collaborative law practices, family and individual counselling etc) to parents and children to help them resolve disputes amicably, quickly and with the least impact and involvement of the children.

Isossy Children celebrates diversity through global clothing for children. Why do you think diversity matters for every generation?
Every child of every generation is different.  Each child has the right to know this and be comfortable with the fact that their circumstances will be different to that of their friends.  This however, does not mean that they are any better or worse off than their friend just that what is normal for them may not be normal for their friend.  Awareness of peoples differences if what makes us unique; and the ability o accept and work with these differences is what will make us a stronger community.

What words of wisdom do you think every child should grow up knowing?
Everything you do is based on the choice you make.  It’s not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument or your age that is to blame.  You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period.  (Elements of life)

Isossy Children meets The founders of The KidsNetwork

Isossy Children was so excited to learn about the amazing work that the KidsNetwork does for parents and their children in Australia (we're really reaching across the world with our networks). We meet Rebecca and Brooke and learn how the KidsNetwork helps parents with a range of issues relating to child development.

What inspired you to start your business?
Rebecca was inspired to start KidsNetwork as a result of her personal experience of managing a child with learning and developmental issues.  Brooke was inspired by a desire to assist families beyond school with strategies for the home.

What have been your favourite client experiences?
Our favourite client experiences are meeting with kids for the first time during the in home consultation. Their responses are refreshingly honest.  We also love it when a child experiences success – often for the first time. It is a WOW moment for them.

What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?
Expect resistance from within the industry.  In our experience families embrace change faster than institutions and practitioners.

What are your long term goals?
To be a national service to families all over Australia

Isossy Children celebrates diversity through global clothing for children. Why do you think diversity matters for every generation?
In our business we see kids with differences every day – they are part of the diverse fabric of schools across the nation.  Embracing their diversity is critical to understanding others and learning from them. Instead of seeing difference as a negative we see it as something that needs to be celebrated, and it is encouraging to see this slow shift over the generations.

What words of wisdom do you think every child should grow up knowing?
That they are unique, that they have many strengths and are loved.

Isossy Children meets Simon Wright, the founder of The miKin App for blended families

In this profile Isossy Children meets Simon Wright the founder of a new App called miKin which aims to bridge the gaps of communication for blended families.

What inspired you to start your business?
We are a blended family of six.  And we have struggled with communication, at times with our ex partners.  We saw the benefit of creating an app that would encourage emotion free communication of children's details between exes or co-parents as we like to call them.  Once we started the design process we realised it would also be a useful tool for any family not just blended ones - we're all busy these days.

What have been your favourite client experiences?
We are still in the process of launching the app.  So far we are enjoying the 'likes' we are now receiving on facebook from people we don't know.  Especially from overseas.

What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?
Be brave.  If you have an idea, send it to an app developer and get them to
send you a scope.

What are your long term goals?
We have set up a company called Social + Apps and when miKin launches we already have various other ideas to develop.  All the ideas centre on using this new technology to help with making communication easier.

We also aim to expand into on-line advertising and mentoring others to develop their app ideas.

Isossy Children celebrates diversity through global clothing for children. Why do you think diversity matters for every generation?
Diversity is important because it helps us be tolerant and understand our differences and learn to be accepting of those differences.  Most discrimination is breed from fear. Fear comes from the unknown.  Diversity gives us knowledge and therefore reduces fear.

What words of wisdom do you think every child should grow up knowing?
“Always aim for the Moon, even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” ― W. Clement Stone.
