10-year-old Entrepreneur wins $60,000 Investment on Shark Tank for lemonade business

We love this story of 10 year old Mikaila Ulmer who appeared on Shark Tank (Think Dragon's Den for US audiences)

The young Austinite is proving that she can swim with the sharks. For the past six years, 10-year-old Mikaila Ulmer has been selling lemonade with BeeSweet Lemonade, a successful Austin-based business that just received a new source of financial backing. 

Ulmer was recently a contestant on Shark Tank, an ABC reality show where start-up companies seek attention (and money) from big-wig investors. On the March 21 episode, the Austinite pitched her BeeSweet Lemonade idea to the panel — and Daymond John took the bait. The established businessman promised the young entrepreneur $60,000 and an East Coast distribution deal in exchange for a 25 percent stake in the beverage company. Isossy Children Supports Jenni Steel's Lioness Ladies Foundation

We were proud to give away a wonderful dress to celebrate Jenni Steel's  Lioness Ladies Foundation which helps women of all ages.  Her first task was to surprise a young lady with a makeover and take her to  The Divas of Colour event event on 22nd March.

The day that I’ll never forget!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Saturday 22^nd March, I went to a tea party with my mum; I was going to have a spectacular surprise! It was such a good feeling! When they had finished all the morning activities, it was my time to shine! Then when Jenni (my mum’s friend) started talking about me, I knew that the surprise was about to begin!

It was really embarrassing because they asked me to come up and talk about the business that I want to set up called: “Girls in Business”.   I was really shy! But at least I got to wear a beautiful designer dress by Isossy Children made especially for me! Next they announced that I was going to a fashion show. I was very excited but I didn’t show it of course!

Then we set off in a taxi to the fashion show. This is epic! Finally we had arrived at the Hilton Hotel where the fashion show was about to take place. We went upstairs and saw some people that Jenni knows. Also I looked around at all the stands that people had set up. They were really cool!

This is the moment that we’ve all been waiting for! But, first I had to wait for Jenni to give her speech about her experience and how it affected her. But that didn’t take long; before I knew it it was time for the fashion show!

It was amazing! I loved it! It was such an inspiration because I want to be a fashion designer when I grow up. Now I get to realise what fashion is all about and that was my first live fashion show. I even took a picture with a real princess!

I would just like to say a big thank you to Jenni (my mum’s friend) for allowing me to go with her to my first live fashion show, and I also want to say a massive thank you to the designer of that beautiful dress, Isossy Children,for the dress they gave me to wear to the fashion show.

Isossy Children meets Claire Mitchell, Founder & Inventor of Chillipeeps

We love new ideas and inventions that help parents be the best that they can be and that keep children happy too! So when we had the chance to interview Claire Mitchell, the inventor of the multi-award winning chillipeeps we were very excited. Chillipeeps solves a common problem many people experience when out and about with young hungry babies and no clean sterilised bottle to use, by allowing a teat or spout to be attached directly to a carton to feed your baby and many mineral water bottles to enable you to rehydrate your baby. What inspired you to start your business? A EUREKA moment, we were late setting off to a family party with our baby daughter. As we had just set off driving I asked my husband if he’d picked up the clean sterilised bottle, as I knew I had ready-made formula cartons in the car. He said ‘Oh you will have done’ So I asked him to check because I couldn’t remember. As he rummaged over the back seat in the baby bag, I ranted ‘Why hasn’t anyone invented anything that directly attaches to the carton?’ We had the bottle and carried on to the party. Six hours later we got in the car to go and I said ‘I can’t stop thinking about it’, the husband said ‘What?’, typical man he’d already forgotten. ‘Why hasn’t anyone invented anything that can directly attach to the carton?’

What have been your favourite client experiences?

Everyday Mums and Dads loving the Chillipeeps Teats, people calling them Genius!
What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?

Be aware of the start-up and development costs upfront. Ensure you understand what standards your products have to adhere to at the beginning, this will save you money in the long term.

What are your long term goals?

What inspired you to start your business?

As parents, we have spent considerable amounts of time trawling the internet to find products that meet both our needs as parents and the desires of our children without us having to wholly compromise on our own sense of personal style, along with time wasted searching fruitlessly for that perfect, really special gift.   Recognising this gap in the market led us to the solution that is dorothyandtheodore.com, a multi-vendor e-commerce site where customers can purchase a wide range of beautiful products from a number of different sellers and only have to checkout once.

What have been your favourite client experiences?

We are really passionate about what we stand for as a brand and are fortunate to work with some amazing sellers who create beautiful things.  One of the gifts we have is a handmade traditional rag doll whose hair colour and style, eye and skin colour can all be made to match their owners.  We have had some wonderful feedback from customers who have bought this and other unique gifts for their loved ones, and it always creates a huge sense of satisfaction that we are able to share these truly special products with others.

What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?

Both the baby and the e-commerce industries are highly competitive.  It takes huge amounts of hard work and time to make a mark in this industry, but if you are passionate about what you do and really believe in your brand, it is absolutely worth the effort.

What are your long term goals?

We hope that www.dorothyandtheodore.com will become the one stop shopping solution for parents who, like us, think that practical can be beautiful and that gifts should be as unique as they are.

Isossy Children meets Caroline Africh, the founder of Things 4 Bubs

Isossy Children takes a trip to the shores of Sunny Australia to meet  Caroline Africh, a mumpreneur, business woman, writer and blogger. Caroline founded Things 4 Bubs, an online retail and distribution company, when deciding to pursue passion over the corporate world after the birth of her son Henry. On a daily basis, Caroline spends her time between running the online business, dealing with suppliers, and looking for expansion opportunities. Caroline is a regular contributor to Aspire Magazine, a member of the CEO Blog Nation Council, and also writes her own entrepreneur blog.  

 

What inspired you to start your business?

I am a banker-cum-mumpreneur who is currently learning how to juggle work, life and a toddler! Having spent the last 10 years building a career as a Project Manager in London, I decided to pursue passion over the corporate world after the birth of my son Henry in 2011. Hence, Things 4 Bubs was born. Things 4 Bubs is the sole distributor of Attipas functional toddler shoes in Australia and New Zealand. Things 4 Bubs also manages the online site Attipas Australia, www.attipas.com.au.

What have been your favourite client experiences?

Hearing positive feedback from each and every client! The shoes have a bit of a cult following with many people trying a pair, then coming back for 3 or 4 more!

What advice would you give to someone starting up in your industry?

Plan carefully (money, timings, goals, etc) but don’t get too caught up with the finer details. Trust your gut and go where your mind takes you. The world is your oyster.

What are your long term goals?

Attipas toddler shoes to be the number 1 choice of toddler shoes in Australia, stocking in all major retails and independent stores.

Each child needs appreciate uniqueness as the world is a unique place. ‘Sheep’ mentality and culture is everywhere in Australia though not something to be celebrated.
